Baltimore School for the Arts Reviews

As a recent graduate of this school, I can say with much confidence that BSfA is a very diverse school with excellent faculty. TWIGS students are admitted not because of the 'know who's who' philosophy, but because it's a great program. The faculty is committed to pulling the most out of the students, and rather than being offended, some people must realize that they are doing their jobs. This school has been one of the greatest experiences for me and I'm proud to be a graduate.

The individual who posted below that admission to BSA is dependent on 'who you know' is either simply sadly misinformed or is engaging in 'sour grapes' behavior. BSA is a true meritocracy: the most qualified young artists are admitted via audition.

I have to disagree with the parent who thinks the audition is all about who you know. I have a child who got into BSA, but did not participate in TWIGS. As a public school employee I also work with many children who participate in TWIGS but did not get in. In fact, of the 10 children I know in TWIGS who applied to SFA, only two got in (for instrumental music). None of the actors got in and the rest of the musicians did not get in.

I am sure this is a great school but it is all about who you know. It is really not about the audition. They say that you do not have to have experience. That is not true. Most of the students that are in the Twiggs Program that they offer are admitted. For this school to be in a very ethnic community, the population of the school is not very diverse. The arrogance of the staff is unbelievable!

i love this school it is so good for people who has talent

I love the academics and they are above a lot of school's academic program. I am a music student and I am not only taught about things on my instrument, but I also learn singing, interpreting music, and learning the history of music.

While this is an above average, safe Baltimore city school, I'm afraid the visual arts program doesn't offer much after the first year. There are no technical skills taught and no demonstrations given. When I voiced concerns the second year, the staff within the visual arts department was unresponsive. Many of the art students never get to be a part of any of the school exhibitions because they are not taught the necessary skills that would enable them to improve. Because so much of the day is taken up by art classes, students have to cram in the required academic courses during senior year. This doesn't seem fair because some of the art courses take up a lot of time for not much. I deduct 2 stars because of the visual arts program. The academic dean, Mr. Moore is fabulous!

I feel very blessed that 3 of my children have been accepted at BSA. 2 of my children were accepted in the visual arts program and 1 is in stage production. My daughter graduated 3 years ago and BSA fully prepared her for college. She stated that the rigorous program at BSA has helped her to breeze through her art classes at college. She was provided a very strong foundation in visual arts thanks to a superior staff of teachers. My sons also love the school. One graduates this year. He is a special needs student and the support he has received is incredible. My youngest is new to the school and says he feels safe and loves his new family (BSA). I love this school!

This school is fabulous! Everywhere I went, there were students and teachers that were like one big family to each other. I couldn't imagine not going to the Bsfa!

I've came in as a Sophmore in Theatre, and everyone immedately made me feel like I was part of the family. All the teachers are behind you 100% in everything you do, and they have many resources for academic help, so you never have to feel like your on your own. I have found the best friends here. People wont judge you for what you wear or how you look, but more on how you present yourself and respect others. The good vibe here is contagious and I have caught the BSA bug.

My son is having such a great experience in this, his freshman year. He is studying visual arts and is thriving academically and artistically. Best of all, he has made lots of good friends already. The student body is made up of such interesting kids--kids he would never have run across otherwise. We could not be happier with the school and his experience.

I feel so fortunate that my son was accepted into the School for The Arts. My son is where he needs to be. He has learned to like classical music and is excited about school. The teachers are very motivating and he has learned so much, and is doing much better academically than ever before. I think this school is awesome!

This school is wonderful. My son was forced to adapt to what every one else was doing instead of being himself. At BSA he is free to let his crazy and silly personality out and feel good about himself.

The BSA is a great place to spend your high school years. It was better than your average city public school, there we were able to meet an assortment of students that we would have never otherwise crossed paths with. It was an eye opening experience that enabled growth beyond what would have been possible at a regular public school. I would recommend this place for any student, TWIGS program and all.

I am a student at the Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA). I am a clarinetist in the music department. BSA is a place that I can come to learn and hang out with all of my great friends. This is a place I call a home away from home because I have been at BSA for 6 years because I was in the TWIGS program. The teachers are always nice to the students and ready to teach us something. I love BSA and only 2 more years until graduation. BSA rocks.

This is a wonderful place to spend your high school years, but it is not by any means an easy ride. Students carry a double major (academics and art form). School starts at 8:30 and ends at 4:10 and beyond. My son is a senior theatre student and he really likes it. He is with the same group of kids in his theatre ensemble that he started with as a freshman in 2002. The director of the theatre department, Donald Hicken is the best. He and the primary acting teacher, Richard Pilcher, have been with BSFA since the beginning (about 25 years ago). I would recommend auditioning to any child with a special talent in the arts. It is an exceptional school, in every respect.

I LOVE BSA! I know this is for parents, but I'm a senior at the Baltimore School for the Arts, and this school has changed my life. Before BSA, I'd never gotten up in the morning and been excited to see what I'd be learning in school. The academics are pretty good, but I like to be challenged, so sometimes I find that the classes move a little slow, but there is AP English, AP French and Calculus offered, so that provides some more rigor if you're looking for it. There are no sports at BSA, but I started up a little after-school soccer thing so anyone who wants can come out and get some exercise. Parents are very involved in the school. They attend performances, help fundraise, etc. My acceptance to BSA is the best thing that has ever happened to me so far.

I am a musician who is looking for a great school of art. Well, I found it. There is no other school in the country that offers this much music in one day. 20 hours a week on music and 20 hours a week on academics. Baltimore School for the Arts truly is the best art school. You will never find one like this in the entire state. Maybe not even it the entire country. This school has unique students as well. Everyone is like a family. We laugh and joke together all of time; what makes it even better is that we can discuss our music to each other and actually know what the other person is talking about. This school is one of a kind. If you are looking for an arts school to go to, Baltimore School for the Arts is definatly the one. -Jeremy Conte (freshman student 2005)

Our daughter graduated in music and attends a major conservatory. She had good preparation in her instrument, but the experience with a diverse and wonderful group of kids gave her an extra 'real world' boost most of her peers in college haven't had. We are fortunate that we have resources to have sent her anywhere -- but we'd BFSA all over again. The humanities are a strength -- kudos to Dr. Casey, Mr. Moore, Mrs. Knight, and the other dedicated teachers.

This is a quality school. There is a strict entrance audition and only the best are accepted to this school. Here, your child will be able to develop their talent under the instruction of some of the best in the trade. Many of the instructor are currently performing. Your child will continue to be encouraged to grow and develop in their area of talent through showcases, performances and recitles. Many of the students and graduates have gone on to become well known stars (Jada Pinkett, Tupac Shakur, Andrew Grahms, Larry Gilliard, just to name a few). BSFA also aids in career advancement. Give your child the very best!
