Meade Senior High School Reviews

Become involved, you will find that Meade High has become a well defined school. From the principal to teachers and staff to the PTSA. The school has many organizations your student can become a member of and parent get involved. Its a great school. My daughters loved it, had no problems. Do not go by what you hear! Its the gem of the Western District as far as I'm concerned

Our school has its problems however I believe that this school has better standards than all other schools such as drugs which are a major problem for example at Meade High School no student has been caught with drugs and no students are caught skipping or anything like that whatsoever this is a school of standard.

i love this schooll great education

I am a student [Freshman] here right now and I can say it is not as bad as people say it is. There aren't a whole lot of fights all the time like people say. Eventhough the school looks very old and dirty, it's still really. The only thing I don't like is the crowded the halls and some of the teachers.

It stinks just got here and my daughter is a softmore and hates it seems that they have no child and teacher interaction just dont care..

My daughter is attending this school as a senior, she doesn't care for it but I have noticed a lot of wonderful things about the school, they have very strong engineering program ,Elp/IB, lots of AP classes and if you student is late, you will get an email or a phone call.

This school is very biased. If you're not African-African, then you definitely do not have as much respect as one of the African-Americans. I am attending the school, and I have a shaved head, and a lot of people do not respect me as much as they should. Also the school worries too much about sports and the science department, rather than other academics and food supply. The school is overcrowded, so no one can really get through the hallways. A lot of teachers do not have a spine and let students walk over them. Lastly, the school system there moves so slowly. They keep students in the wrong classes for weeks. So really, the school is mostly an inner-city school, and parents should think twice about permitting their children to attend there.

I am a Freshman a Meade and an ELP/IB student and the teachers are great they get you involved in topics. its like a college setting. the only things that i could complain about is the building . classes are shared and my math class is in the band room so sometimes i am distracted. classrooms dont have doors, the school just seems to be falling apart. but there are good students and teachers.

I am a senior at Meade High School. I've been here for all four years, and what can I say? Its high school. People think we're so 'ghetto,' only because we have a certain ratio of races. The school isn't the nicest building, but the teachers there actually care about the students. Just like any other school, we have the so called bad kids. So what? It's amazing to see how every one comes together to join as one, you can find so many people blending with other cliques. And yeah, if you put yourself in the right classes like AP, IB or Project Leade the Way kinda stuff you'll get more attention. I love this school, the staff isn't my best choice, but they're doing fine. We don't have that many fights, we don't have guns, we don't have drugs being sold, and no we do not start riots.

I am a parent of a ninth grade student at Meade. He is in the IB/ELP program and last year when we realized he HAD to go here instead of Old Mill, we were very disappointed. We toured the school so that when we could find a reason to NOT send him here because of the reputation the school has. Now we are here and we could not have had a more inaccurate view of the school! The principal, Mr. Kennedy is absolutly wonderful. The IB/ELP coordinator, Ms. Quinn is excellent. The whole school has been very welcoming and the kids are great. The PTSA is very involved and offers a wonderful presentastion at each meeting that is a wealth of infromation to parents. I plan to send my daughter here next year as she will also be in the IB/ELP program and I feel very confortable in this decission.

My daughter is a Freshman at Meade High, and as many parent I was concern since I have heard things about the school that were not so nice. I decided to get involved and started to volunteer at the school and soon found out that they have a group of dedicated teachers and administrators that do a great job making the school of 1200 students a safe place. My daughter is in the ELP/IB program and has many good friends. Like any other school including the ones we went to there is always some children that have disciplinary problems, some parents that don't care and expect the school to do the parenting job for them but for my experience is not like they make it seem.

Meade High School is a wonderful school, though sometimes in the past it wasnt great people are making it seem like it was hell on earth. Mr.Kennedy (the principal) is doing great. We are actually the premire high school of Anne Arundel County, we are the first school to have a full running IB programme and the Homeland Security Signature, which I belong to. Meade has one of the biggest Key Clubs and over all is a great school Dont believe the hype when people try to put Meade down. I attend Meade High School and I am a Mighty Mustang

Why 4 stars? Why not four stars? You know what... In order to give you reason, i will justify each star with the most significant features of school that make it worthy.1: It's JROTC has grown to be one of the best in the region. Having accomplished many things that most people cant even think of and exposes students to people that they would not otherwise noy been able to meet. JROTC is a leadership organization, supported by the school, and lead by student leaders of Mead.2: The IB program has developed over this passed 07-08 school year from ,literally, nothing. Student ambitions have grown and horizons have been brodened. Not to metion all those that have been published. The administration, even in the over populated state, makes it a point to know each student by name.(2000+)4: The track team rocks! It has its general problems..but it works through them!

Meade High is truly what you make of it. If you take AP classes/honors classes/IB classes, you receive less attention for what you are doing compared to the attention that many of the poorly behaved students. Throughout my time at Meade, I have seen more disrespect than ever before. Students constantly talk back to teachers and I've even seen teachers pushed in the hallways. The school is falling apart (in some places there aren't even ceiling tiles) but the science labs are being renovated and look great. The Key Club and Literary Magazine are award winning, and the track team is a reigning champion. From this school I've learned to be tougher and more independent, because that's what you really need to get by at Meade.

I am a current student at meade high and i have to say that all i have learned from this school is just be quiet and you wont get hurt. But still people have no right to critisize our school because our budget is really low so yeah. There are a lot of fights here to about race and stupid stuff like that but that is handled by our 'wonderful' staff.

We are moving to PA thanks to our experience here at Meade High. There is one teacher I must take my hat off to: Ms. Goss, she stays on top of her students and won't let them give her any crap, for that I am thankful. I wish all the teachers were like her. I have one son that graduated last and one son who just started. Neither of my boys liked this school. My middle son has been the target of some of the wonderful gangbangers we have on our school (a matter of fact for most schools in this area, I know which is why we are moving to PA). I have found the councilors here to be uninterested and overworked (being overworked is not their fault all the schools in the area are crowded).

I went to this school years ago. Meade is not the best school ever, but every school has it's problems. Let's focus on the big picture... A) Every school in the area is overcrowded, so if the admin. doesn't respond right away, it's b/c they have quite a few children to attend. B) You try have champion sports teams when half the kids from the year before have parents being moved by the military. C) Money's tight in every district...so if your club/team doesn't have enough funding, there's this thing called Fundraisers, we've all done them. D) I had some wonderful teachers there and some horrible ones...just like I did at the University of Maryland. E)You really want to see gangs and violence...try going to school in Baltimore city. I survived 4 years here and I like to think I'm fairly intelligent. Stop whining people.

All the parents who say that Meade is a disgrace or is disgusting, sound very ignorant. I am a student at Meade and I would not want to transfer to any other school. Before anyone attempts to put-down my school, here are some actual facts to go on. First, we have some of the highest test score in the county. We have one of the largest Key Clubs in the county (for those that don't know: Key Club is a volunteer organization). We are award winning, and the Key club advisor was honored on T.V. for founding the organization, Happy Helpers. Since you believe other schools in the county are so much better you should attend one were many were caught cheating on AP test; or one where a fight escalate to the point that a gun was brought to a mall and fired. Get your facts straight next time!!!!

My oldest daughter graduated from Meade a few years ago with a full scholarship. I have two other daughters who are currently attending Meade. They are in AP and Honors classes and find them to be academically challenging. They have done well on their SATs, too. I believe that Meade gets far too much bad publicity. It is rare to hear about the good things that are happening at Meade. My daughters are involved in club activities from Meade where they have learned to volunteer a great deal of their time assisting the homeless. I believe that Meade provides an environment where students can learn and achieve if they really want to do so. The teachers and counselors are receptive to those who exhibit a desire to succeed.

Last year (2006-07) was okayish. I was sometimes the targets of fights in Meade and even in the crossfire of fights. The teachers weren't bad. However, things seem to go downward. The teacher quality isn't that great. Harrassment is still visible in Meade. To be truthful, the situation at Meade is rather ugly.

I'm an alumni from the class of 2003 at Meade. I was a student there all 4 years of high school, and Joan Valentine was our principal. I'm not sure if she's still there, but what a joke she was. There were constant fights in the back hallways, racism running rampant, and if you weren't in the AP classes or 'higher-level' classes, the education you received was appalling. The administration who tries to cover it up and teachers who don't care pretty much sum up my experience at Meade. I can only hope that it has improved in some way since I graduated.

I have been a teacher at this school for 6 years now. It does have problems, however, it does not deserve the reputation that it gets. The academic programs are excellent with the addition of the IB program. The sports program is on the rebound with a lot of young coaches. We need more parent involvement. If we are to become one of the best schools in the county we need the PARENTS to step up and help us change the school. I truly believe that you should send your kids to Meade.

I am a student at Meade, and I would like to say that Meade isn't that bad, its just like any other school. All schools have fights. My only problem with my school is that something must be going on because the best teachers never stay too long. Mr. Jackson and Mr. Fortune are great teachers who really cared about us. but they are gone now. Mr. Kennedy is a great administrator! I just wish they would have kept the teachers that cared about us!

For the past year I have tried hard to get involved. Conclusion: disgusting. 1. What's the point of all those AP classes if the school is the worst concerning academics and safety? 2. 'The school is diverse' if the definition for diversity is people of different background crammed into one school with no respect for each other at all. 3. The whole building is falling apart, there re only 3 bathrooms available in the whole building with one missing mirrors, I've seen one bathroom that wasn't cleaned for 3-4 months. 4. It's safer because it's on military base? I'm sorry, but that's not the case. We get fights often and students think it's a treat to get distracted from class by catfights, they cheer for it too, even the so-called 'good students'. And by the way, the food we get at principle's honor roll honor roll breakfast is the leftover of school-sold breakfast.

Like many other parents we make it a priority to be involved with our children's education. Also like many other parents our child has the potential to excel in many areas however; our involvement was consistently voided by the lack of feedback and paperwork inconsistencies produced by the Staff members of Meade Senior High. Erroneous graded homework assignments and inconsistent accounting practices seem to be the norm at Meade Senior High. I hope there is a solution to the issues at MSH not for my child but for the young men and women soon to become students.

The school is what you make out of it. It has a diverse student body from various backgrounds. The school is not the best academically, but does offer numerous AP classes. Also, the track team is very good, they have won the county championship three times straigh, regionals, and were this years 4A State champions. The school sends many students to prestigious colleges and many of the athletes have gone on to play division 1 sports.

My daughter just graduated from Meade and the overall experience was negative. The administration is not supportive and since my child was an average student with no problems they weren't even aware of her existence. I tried hard to get my daughter into another school prior to her starting at Meade but was unsuccessful and unfortunately my fears were realized. I was not surprised that the graduation was rowdy, unorganized and close to a mob scene - a typical testimony to Meade's way of running their school. I am thrilled that my child is out of that school - a terrible experience.

I'm a freshman student at this school and I absolutely regret being a part of it. We have lots of disruptions and rude, stupid behaviors in class. Sometimes teachers cannot control them. Some students even avoid letting people know that they have Straight-As so that people won't laugh at them for being `geeks`. I've encountered problems with the office staff when I m politely asking a question and all I get is rude replies. People say that it s a good school because it s diverse, but I ve seen no respect for diversity in the student body whatsoever. My parents and I are thinking of transferring me to another school no matter what the cost is. We get fights frequently, and we almost never win at our sports programs. Please think through before you come. Worst school ever.

I am a sophomore at Meade and I must say that the school is not great but it dose't deserve the bad rep it has either. The school is often referred to as 'ghetto ' and 'poor' however that is only due to the few kids who ruin it for everybody. the school is diverse and that is great because as a student you can get a taste of different cultures. although the athletics aren't good ,based on scores, we are very sprited and the teams become like your second family. we are trying. the only bad thing is the administration is too strict about something and not strict enough about others. and by the way try to get in to upper level classes you will get more out of your schooling. e.m

I have a current student at Meade as well as a recent graduate. We like the school. We are moving soon and our child asked only that we stay in the Meade district. Like any school, it is what you make it. My oldest took 7 AP courses and graduated with honors and scholarships. My youngest is in the IB program and loves it. There are some great teachers here. The music program is excellent. Meade does not deserve the bad rep. If anything, students are safer here because of the military presence. The diverse student body is something all schools should hope for. We could live anywhere in the county, but we choose to live here.

My son has been a student at Meade High school since September 2006. I have attempted to contact his teachers since October regarding his grades. he is a special ed student with an IEP. I have been to the administrator, guidance and special ed all without resolution. Meeting with the principle has been impossible. I have had it with Meade High and will be homeschooling my son within the next four weeks. Meade has consistently ignored my pleas for help for my son and I hold them responsible for his lack of academic success. No communication with the parents = failure for a student.

I'm a freshman at Meade, and I don't believe that Meade is giving me as much support as I need. The athletics are average, with some extremely good teams and some not so good teams. There's a lot of school spirit at the football games. The music department is very good. However, as a member of the drama club, we aren't supplied very much because of the lack of money. Hardly anyone comes out to our shows, either. The school should fund more for the drama club because we desperately need money. If I had a choice, I would attend another school over Meade.

As a sophomore at meade currently have seen, The academics at the school are generally good, but that is only the case if you are in the honors and AP classes, some of my friends who are not, complain that they don't get much done because there are many disruptions, and many of those teachers don't seem to care, the school is generally alright. the extracurricular activities are not that great, as there is very little student involvement, in the school, in addition to the small amount of parental involvement. We don't have much money to use, so the school isn't in the best condition, the one thing that has made my two years so far enjoyable are my wonderful friends, there are many great students in the school, but there is a lot of violence, but I have been able to avoid that. The school has a lot of culture and diversity.

As a 'graduate' of Meade High School I can say I was intimate with the inner workings of the staff, students, and teachers. Regarding the staff more than not they would rather do nothing than anything. Regarding students and the safety I needed to get in a fight with someone about twice a year just to prove I was not a target, enough said. Regarding punishment on the same note I would generally get no more than several days to a week Suspension for these fights. The only redeeming quality of this school is a core of very dedicated teachers that actually want to teach, the only problem is they cant teach the unwilling. All in all I would reccomend this school only to those who want their child to pass with no real knowledge gained, I was totally unprepared for even community college and have been struggleing with many basics.

I personally went to Meade High School for my 11th and 12th grade years. Althought Meade has its downfalls, as all schools do, it's actually a good place to go to school. The majority of my teachers were amazing and I learned some of life's most amazing lessons from them. I was enrolled in 1 AP class my Junior year and 2 my Senior year as well as being the editor of the school paper. As with any high school, Meade is what you make of it. If you get involved you will get back as much as you give. Based upon my academic's and my SAT scores I was giving a full tuition scholarship to Howard University. No school is perfect and although Meade may not be the school with the most money or the most resources, it offers plenty of opportunities to grow and to become a great student.

Meade Senior High School is offering an outstanding academic environment to my child. After recently returning from exceptional DOD high school in Europe, Meade has offered the academic engagement and intensity that is preparing my child for college. The school offers an outstanding AP and honors program and has an extremely caring principal, faculty, and teachers. Major Otha Thornton

When it comes down to your decision in which school to enroll your child in, DO NOT enroll your child in this school. I grew up in Maryland my whole life and I attended Anne Arundel County schools up until I moved to Texas recently in the past few months. The two years I spent at Meade Senior High School were horrible. The ONLY thing I enjoyed were the friends that I made there. Discipline is dissapointing. Students constantly fight and rebel against teachers even. In one case there was a gang threat that there was going to be a shooting after-school. Not only that but academics and extracurricular activites were the worst I've ever experienced. I feel as if I wasted my education spending my first two years of high school there at Meade.

Meade Senior High is not a place to send the youth. The conditions at the school are so horrible and immoral. Extracurricular activtites here at Meade are lacking the tools/equipment in order for athletes to succed on the field. Drugs are a really big problem there. The safety of this school is ironically very poor even though its on a military base, gangs and weapons are a constant worry. The only positive thing I can say about it is that some teachers are actually very good (Mr. Guilford, Mrs. Jepsn, and Mrs. Molchan.)

I've been a student at Meade for about a year now and have seen both the good and bad. Meade Senior High is not as bad as a school as people think it is. If there were more cooperative students and more teachers that were willing to help then maybe our reputation would change. Also, the principal should not be blamed because she's doing the best that she can.

Very happy to be retiring to Tallahasse, Florida so that all three of my children will not be attending Meade Senior High to obtain their diploma. I have only one thing to say nice, I really enjoyed the basketball season because of Coach Rucker, Coach Saunders and Coach Holder. Everything else I am not pleased with. If you can't say anything nice it is said to say nothing at all. Thank you.

Disgust!!! I have met, emailed and provided work/cell and home numbers on numerous times and my child failed (4) classes. Coffee with the Principal, PTA, Back to School Night, conferences I initiated how much more is required to be classified as a concerned parent and given the opportunity to be notified prior to failure. Don't know how much money the school receives from offering Twilight Classes (classes offered to make up failed classes) but it makes me wonder....

Our family recently moved to the Hanover area and our daughter has been enrolled at Mead High School since 2/2/2005. The short time at Meade has been very disappointing. Adjectives used to describe our personal experiences would be as follows: unprofessional and rude. We had been warned that this was one of the WORST schools to enroll a child. We should have listened. I have conducted the AA County School Board to voice my complaints. Where are the teachers of yesterday - those individuals who looked upon their job, not as a job, but their calling. We have a younger child, I assure you, he will not attend Mead High School. I will find the money to have him educated through private schools!

A school with a bad reputation all around. Hardly any AP classes and virtually no involvement with the community.

I would not allow any student to attend this disgraceful school. Anne arundel county has some very fine schools, but they ignore meade because it is on a base. I am the mother of three former students who were extremely motivated until they entered meade. 2 Of the 3 dropped out and got their geds and one took almost 5 years to graduate. This is no reflection on their ability because they have done very well. It is an indictment against meade and its poor staff. The pta is involved there. Our community raises scholarship money for meade students every year and no one from the school ever shows up. They don't even come to the community fairs. So, it isn't the parents' lack of interest. The principal is an embarrassment and they send teachers there just to get them to quit. High turnover in the staff.

The mrs. valintine is a good principal.

As a graduate of Meade High, I must say this, you shouldn't complain about this school as you do. Be grateful the current principal even took the job, this school was a horrid mess before she got there. If it wasn't for her a lot of students would not of graduated. Meade could use some help in some areas, but for the most part Meade has been rehabilitated more than you even know. The teachers are doing their best, it's hard when you have uncooperative students. Parents should be more involved with their kids, not only with the extracurricular activities.

I have never encountered a more uncooperative staff. Everytime I have contacted this school, I have encountered hostility. My child is expected to walk to school when a bus comes by our house. Students have to wait in the cold outside until the teachers are ready to unlock the doors in the morning. My child is in 10th grade and almost all of his assignments involve colored pencils and poster board. What kind of curriculum is this? Why does everyone seem to think that giving a school more money will improve education. There are students in China outperforming Americans while learning in rooms with dirt floors. Money does not teach. People teach. Hire some that know their way around the classroom without their teacher's edition textbook, and have the communication skills to work with parents and students.

This is a High School on a US Army installation that buses in kids from the surrounding cities. It is not your typical, safe, clean well funded and maintained post school. My children are very disappointed in the condition of the school and the inner city environment in the school.
