Maryland Zoo in Baltimore lets visitors walk on the wild side
Opened in 1876, The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is considered to be the third oldest zoological establishment in the United States. More than 2000 animals call the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore home, and hundreds of thousands of visitors attend the zoo each year.
Located in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park, the zoo takes part in several conservation programs and is well-known for its flourishing African black-footed penguin breeding program, which is the largest in the country. In 2008, one of the zoo's African elephant's gave birth to a nearly-300 pound baby named Samson; the first African elephant born within the zoo.
Along with much-loved zoo favorites like zebras, giraffes, hippos and elephants, the Maryland Zoo also features exotic cheetahs, leopards, crocodiles and penguins. The polar bear exhibit also features a thriving polar bear habitat where these surprisingly graceful creatures swim and play.
Hungry guests can enjoy fresh meals and snacks at any of the zoo's cafes or concession stands. From cotton candy to pizza to ice cream, there are many family-friendly treats to choose from. If you'd rather, you can pack your lunch and enjoy a delightful family picnic in the shady pavilion.
Weekday zoo admission is $13 for adults, $11 for seniors and $9 for kids aged 2-11. Kids under 2 are free. Weekend rates are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for kids 2-11. Kids under 2 remain free on weekends. Group rates are available. For group information, call (412) 366-LION.
