Ban Thai: Seventeen Years of Authentic Thai Cuisine in Baltimore
Jan 24, 2010
Baltimore's Ban Thai Restaurant is one of the city's most highly-regarded Thai eateries. This well-known establishment prides itself on serving authentic Thai food made only with high-quality ingredients, many of which are imported. Evenings and weekends bring hungry patrons by the hoards to this popular restaurant, which is often bustling.
Customers describe Ban Thai's food as being fresh, hot, spicy and real, not mimicking authentic Thai food, but actually creating it. Don't let the minimalist exterior fool you-- Ban Thai is a Baltimore favorite for a reason, and it's all about the vittles.
Ban Thai entrees include ethnic favorites like Ka Prow-- a spicy dish made with your choice of beef, chicken or pork with basil leaves and hot chilies; Mu Dang-- a honey-roasted pork with crisp Thai vegetables; Kratiam Pik Thai with chicken or pork, white pepper and garlic sauce; and Goong Num Pik King-- sauteed shrimp with chili paste and string beans.
The local favorite at Ban Thai is the Pad Thai-- sauteed rice noodles with shrimp, eggs, peanuts, and bean sprouts in a spicy brown sauce. The Kao Pad Sapparod, featuring fried rice, shrimp, pork, sausage and pineapple, follows close behind.
A wide variety of vegetarian entrees, such as the Pad Puck Tofu with mixed vegetables, Pad Pik King with stir-fried string beans and spicy chili paste, and Pad Woon Sen with sauteed bean thread, vegetables and eggs, are also available.
Ban Thai works with its customers to adapt its dishes to their liking, whether it be for taste or dietetic reasons. Ask your server for recommendations if you need them.
